AI at PTC

How we’re bringing valuable, scalable, and responsible AI-powered solutions to our customers.

Our perspective on AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool that is being applied within and across PTC products in thoughtful, customer-centric ways. We’re using it to improve the user experience, create value from the data entrusted to our products, and make it easier to derive insights across engineering, manufacturing, and service.

For more than 10 years, we have applied AI in our products, from machine learning to computer vision. As new technologies like generative AI emerge, we will continue to invest in our enterprise offerings in valuable, scalable, and responsible ways.

Our guiding principles for AI investments

Valuable

Solve customer problems with AI and invest in practical applications.

Investing in AI for more than a decade

AI governance

In 2023, in recognition of the fast-evolving landscape of AI, we formally established an AI governance framework to lead our efforts in adopting responsible AI governance, while fostering AI innovation.

Our governance model actively oversees AI implementation internally and externally, especially as it relates to risk, compliance, data privacy, and IP protection.

Practical AI solutions across the product lifecycle

Our goal is to apply AI to our customers’ top problems. We’ve identified the applications where we can bring the most value for product companies.

Engineering

In product design and engineering, AI can support the increasing challenge of product complexity, which impacts the entire product lifecycle. Below are some specific value drivers and AI applications:

  • Accelerate product development through smart requirements and test authoring, design recommendations, and supplier analytics
  • Reduce cost of goods sold (COGS) through part rationalization, reuse, and classification
  • Improve product quality, reduce risk, and drive impact through change management analytics and IP protection

Manufacturing

With priorities like efficiency and product quality, manufacturers benefit from AI applications that support the following value drivers:

  • Design for manufacturability through automating process plans and work instructions authoring
  • Improve operational efficiencies by identifying bottlenecks, time loss efficiencies, and accelerate issue triage and resolution
  • Skill the workforce with AI-assisted assembly, changeover, and maintenance

Service

Delivering high-quality service, particularly for long-lifecycle products, challenges even the most efficient organizations. AI applications focused on the following can support the service organization’s most important goals:

  • Optimize spare parts management with inventory forecasting, pattern detection, failure rate root cause, and sustainability insights
  • Enable proactive service with remote troubleshooting and triage and forecast technician scheduling
  • Reduce service delivery costs by reducing field visits and truck rolls and on-site time with AI assistance

Customer experience

In addition to looking at ways AI can help our customers support their customers, we’re developing applications that make our software easier to use. Across our portfolio, we’ve identified ways to improve customer experience through smart search, chatbot for knowledge, and expert support.

AI helps companies get more from product data

"Companies that leverage AI strategically and in ways that impact the business will have an advantage in the marketplace. More specifically, companies that recognize and leverage their product data as a strategic enterprise asset will be able to transform how they design, manufacture, and service their products."

Steve Dertien, Chief Technology Officer, PTC

How can AI help product companies with their top challenges?

PTC has several applied analytics and AI initiatives in place and in progress. Continuing to build on more than a decade of investments, PTC’s applied analytics and AI strategy aims to bring value to our customers by applying practical AI solutions to our customers’ top problems.

Service optimization

Optimize service delivery, enhance customer experience, and reduce costs with generative AI, machine learning, and computer vision.

Market-demanded product and service innovation

Accelerate product development with generative design and optimize service delivery by enabling service techs with relevant information via generative AI and machine learning.

Environmental sustainability

Use generative design to help with dematerialization and optimize service part inventory to meet service levels, while reducing stocked parts and expedited shipping.

Competitive advantage

With AI improving rapidly, identifying ways to implement AI strategically and impact the business will have an advantage in the marketplace.

Evolving workforce

Globally disperses teams and a tech-native workforce requires businesses to leverage new technologies, like AI, to recruit and retain talent.
