Headquartered in Lemgo, Germany; Gebr. Brasseler GmbH & Co. KG has long had its teeth in the market for rotating dental instruments and systems. A family-founded and owned company, Brasseler designs and manufactures the world’s largest portfolio of these instruments as part of their Komet business unit. The unit produces motor-driven precision tools for use in surgical drive systems for customers in 105 countries.

Dentists work with sharp tools in small spaces. One small design or production error, and the tool won’t have the right shape or angle to function accurately in the dentist’s hand (or the patient’s mouth).

Getting to the Root of Designing Complex Dental Instruments

Brasseler’s design department relied on software tools that didn’t have 3D parametric design capabilities – and the result wasn’t always manufacturable. The back-and-forth between the design and manufacturing teams led not only to tedious design re-work but to longer lead times. Moreover, collaborative work was nearly impossible. If more than one person worked on the same design, or if some part of the design were passed around, there was no way to capture knowledge from multiple sources.

The Solution—Driving Efficiency Through Technology

Brasseler knew that a parametric CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer aided manufacturing) solution would allow them to produce high-quality 3D designs and associated data. They could automate crucial parts of the design process and enjoy increased productivity and throughput. They embarked on a digital transformation—applying new processes and the right technology for a revamp of how they approached part of their work.

They turned to PTC Creo’s 3D CAM solution, Creo NC. Creo NC allows Brasseler to generate data to drive numerical control (NC) machine tools with precision and accuracy.

Creo NC and Tool Design solutions enable Brasseler to achieve the highest-quality precision machining in the fastest possible time. Some of these benefits include:

• Faster time to market
• Reduced product development costs
• Improved product quality
• Increased customer satisfaction

Automation and Standardization with Creo NC

With Creo NC, Brasseler defines features once, and then applies them consistently across models, parts, and products. More control during the design phase reduces the likelihood of errors and miscommunication downstream—saving time and money.

“Creo’s design features help us standardize our most complicated design processes,” says Kornej Nickel, Coordinator of Digital Manufacturing. “This saves a lot of time, especially when working with an intricate model.”

Additionally, Creo NC has a broad range of tool path capabilities to support Brasseler’s needs. Designers and manufacturing can specify tools and tool paths that will be used to machine the finished part. If a change needs to be made to the 3D design, the seamless integration helps reduce re-work and errors, since Creo NC automatically recalculates the tool path. This saves a lot of time and money for Brasseler.
