Introduction

Welcome to Third Angle, diving headfirst into the future of sleep tech.

Sleep issues affect many of us, and we're more aware than ever of the serious impacts on our health that lack of sleep can have. It's no wonder we've turned to technology to track and analyze our sleep patterns. But San Francisco based Eight Sleep is taking sleep optimization to the next level. They're on a mission to improve the way we rest.

Their newest product, Pod4 Ultra, incorporates autopilot technology. Adjusting temperatures independently on each side of the bed to cater for individual comfort. It also submits detailed sleep reports every morning and the clever part is it can gently wake you up at the optimal time. We sent our producer, Bria Suggs, to meet Eight Sleep's technical program manager, Harry Xiao, and of course, experience a demo of the Pod4 Ultra in action.

About Eight Sleep

Eight Sleep was founded in 2014 in San Francisco by Matteo Franceschetti, Massimo Andreasi Bassi, Andrea Ballarini, and Alexandra Zatarain. Eight Sleep's flagship product is the Pod mattress, an intelligent cooling and heating system for your bed. Eight Sleep’s products are currently used by pro athletes and top performers across multiple industries and the Pod was recognized as one of TIME’s “Best Inventions” in 2018 and 2019 and was named one of Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Companies” in 2018.” Around 2019 the pod one was launched and the pod one was Eight Sleep's first product that started to heat and cool the bed to provide that thermal regulation. Throughout the years, pod one became pod two, became pod three and now pod four. Every generation the product is in my opinion, just a lot more refined and a lot more capable in providing that better sleep experience.”

The Pod 4 Ultra: Features and Functionality

The Pod4 Ultra is Eight Sleeps latest generation of the intelligent mattress heater & cooler. “We're one of the few companies in the world that can offer this. This is much cheaper than air conditioning, so if you have air conditioning that you know must cool down the entire house and the rooms that you're not using, this uses way less power… I guess one thing I'm not sure if you kind of noticed this. One side's cool, one side's really warm. And this is a really important feature for us is to have completely independent temperature control because often you sleep with a partner, and then you're always fighting on, you know, someone wants it really warm and it's too hot for the other person or someone wants it really cool and it's too cold for the other person. So having two independent zones for temperature has been a big hit for us.”

The positive effect of a good night’s sleep

Harry Xiao has a background in developing wearable technologies. He gets a lot of personal gratification from allowing people to achieve a great night’s sleep. “What we do at Eight Sleep…there is this key sensing technology, but on the other hand, we can do something about it through an actuation mechanism. And that way we can collect the data and then use our technologies to then change something, which is the temperature in which you sleep. And ultimately that feedback loop means the outcome is no longer just a piece of data from a sensor, but it's the feeling that you feel so much more refreshed or it's like "hey, I feel great because I've had good sleep" or "hey, I feel so much better about my day because I have good sleep". And to me, that outcome is just so much more impactful and so much more meaningful than just a bunch of numbers on a page.”

Arena: PTC’s PLM and QMS solutions

The Arena PLM solution makes it easy for product teams to collaborate anytime and anywhere. With our cloud-native platform, we bring product information, people, and processes into a single cloud-based system to speed new product development and introduction and keep everyone on the same page. “Eight Sleep was growing and they had more complex products, with each product having over a hundred parts. They needed a more capable system to manage the whole product life cycle. Since Arena is cloud native, they were able to start up and learn quickly the plug and play element of Arena. It was a huge win for them. Competing in this global economy is very challenging. You need to share the latest product and quality information with your internal teams and with supply chain partners. So that you can deliver innovative products to customers fast. The Arena PLM solution, it makes it easy for product teams to collaborate anytime and anywhere.
